Jonathan Salazar Arrested in Deadly DUI Crash in Gardena
GARDENA, CA (December 24, 2019) – A young man died in a DUI crash Tuesday morning in Gardena, authorities said.
The crash happened just after 6:00 a.m. at the intersection of West Artesia Boulevard and Normandie Avenue.
Police said a black Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, driven by 24-year-old Jonathan Salazar of Vista, traveled east when it slammed into the back of a gray Honda Civic moving in the same direction. The impact pushed the Honda into the intersection and into a traffic signal in the center median.
A small folding ladder in the Honda hit the back of the head or neck of the man riding in the front passenger seat, police said. That person was found lying on the road next to the Honda.
Arriving units pronounced the man dead at the scene. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s office identified him as 18-year-old Bailey Reyna. However, his city of residence is not disclosed.
Paramedics transported another person to a hospital with serious injuries.
Police arrested Salazar on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. As a result, Salazar is held on $100,000 bail. He is scheduled to go to court Tuesday, according to jail records.
During this mournful time, we would like to send our well-wishes and sincere sympathies to the grieving family and friends of Bailey Reyna.
