Azucena Aguilar Hospitalized After Bicycle vs. Car Crash on Summer Camp Drive in Cypress

Cypress, TX (October 3, 2024) – Azucena Aguilar, a 9-year-old, sustained injuries in a car crash on Summer Camp Drive.

A Cypress family is speaking out after their 9-year-old daughter was struck by a car while riding her bike to school. 

The incident occurred in a crosswalk near McGown Elementary in the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, a district that recently reduced its bus routes.

The accident took place at Summer Camp Drive and Westgreen Boulevard, just a block from the elementary school. 

Azucena Aguilar, a fourth-grader, shared that she had felt it was only a matter of time before something like this happened.

On Wednesday, as part of Astros Day at McGown Elementary, Azucena was biking to school and had made it halfway through the crosswalk when she saw the car approaching.

“As I was almost there, the car just sped by and hit me,” Azucena recalled. “I remember flying through the air and landing hard on my hip, which hurt a lot.”

Her mother, Nina Aguilar, witnessed the entire incident.

“I couldn’t believe it was happening,” Nina said. “I was in complete shock.”

“I just saw my mom running towards me,” Azucena added.

Azucena, still in her Astros outfit, spoke to KHOU 11 News from her living room. 

Though she ended up in the hospital, she was fortunate to escape with only minor injuries, including some bumps and bruises.
