18-Year-Old High School Senior from Vallejo Fatally Injured in Crash near Elna Drive
VALLEJO, CA (March 7, 2018) – A high school senior was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver on Vervais Avenue, on Wednesday afternoon.
Around 3:40 PM, a man was driving a 1994 GMC Suburban northbound on Vervais Ave, when he stopped near Elna Drive. For unknown reasons, the SUV began to roll backward down the street, where it struck 18-year-old Ayres Buffin of Vallejo, rolled over, and came to a rest on its side.
Buffin was walking on the sidewalk when she was hit. Surveillance videos show a man getting out of the vehicle and running away from the scene. The man is believed to be 29-year-old Vincent Fitzer, according to Vallejo Police Lt. Michael Nichelini.
The young woman was taken to a nearby hospital where she succumbed to her injuries and was later pronounced dead.
Fitzer has an extensive criminal background, with 31 charges including theft and burglary. He is reported to be a transient with no home base, but family in the Vallejo area.
