Tyler Veeneman and Luis Mendoza Hospitalized after Fatal Crash near York Avenue
AVENAL, CA (May 12, 2018) – A head-on collision on State Route 41 near York Avenue on Saturday night, left two people dead and three injured.
The fatal crash happened just before 8:30 PM, halfway between Kettleman City and Cholame. According to the California Highway Patrol, 21-year-old Tyler Veeneman of Avenal was driving northbound on SR 41 in a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse. For unknown reasons, he swerved into the southbound lanes and collided head-on with a 2005 Ford F150.
The driver, 65-year-old Luis Mendoza od Tulare was injured and taken to the Kaweah Delta Hospital. His 56-year-old female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, alongside the passengers in Veeneman’s vehicle, ages 22 and 23. Veeneman suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to Fresno’s Community Regional Medical Center for treatment and evaluation. There is no update on his current medical condition.
Authorities continue to investigate the fatal collision, but drugs and alcohol are being considered to be contributing factors. No additional information has been released at this time regarding the cause of the accident, or the identities of the deceased victims.
