VAN NUYS, CA (July 22, 2019) – Officials have identified Arutyun Darakchyan as the driver involved in a fatal crash on the 405 Freeway in Van Nuys early Friday morning.
The California Highway Patrol reported that the crash occurred in the southbound lanes close to the Roscoe Boulevard exit at about 3:21 a.m. At least one person died in the incident.
According to the witnesses, Darakchyan might have been racing. However, investigators have not yet determined the cause of the crash.
Another person who suffered injuries in the crash was taken to an area hospital in unknown condition.
The crash prompted the closure of the far-right lane and the southbound on-ramp to the 405 Freeway. Crews worked to clear the area where the vehicle had gone down an embankment.
Commuters experienced delays in traffic during the morning rush hour. Bumper-to-bumper traffic began around the 118 Freeway interchange. All lanes of the freeway reopened after the initial investigation and clearing operation.
