Javier Cortez and Jaime Hernandez Severely Injured in Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash in Earlimart
EARLIMART, CA (January 23, 2020) – A man was killed in a hit-and-run crash Thursday morning in Tulare County, CHP officials said.
The crash happened around 7:00 a.m. on Avenue 56, just west of Road 176.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a Honda Odyssey, a Chevrolet Silverado and a Honda Civic were traveling east on Avenue 56. At the same time, a Mini Cooper was heading west on the highway.
For unknown reasons, the Mini Cooper collided head-on with the Chevrolet.
As a result, the driver of the Mini Cooper suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. Investigators identified him as 32-year-old Antonio Mejia Lopez.
Meanwhile, paramedics rushed the driver of the Chevrolet, 45-year-old Javier Cortez, and passenger, 30-year-old Jaime Hernandez, to Kaweah Delta Medical Center with severe injuries.
CHP says the drivers in the two other cars fled the scene after the crash. The Honda Odyssey was reportedly stolen.
Investigators are now searching for the two drivers who left the crash scene.
