Injuries Reported after Newhall Auto Accident on Interstate 5 and Lyons Avenue
NEWHALL, CA (July 27, 2023) – Tuesday afternoon, authorities arrested Anthony Carreon after a high-speed pursuit crash on Interstate 5 and Lyons Avenue.
The initial high-speed pursuit spearheaded by the Central Division California Highway Patrol (CHP) units north of Los Angeles County began at 8:33 a.m.
Officers tried to pull over a white Dodge Challenger due to speeding.
“The vehicle traversed multiple areas and city streets with Central Division units who ultimately disengaged the pursuit,” the CHP revealed.
At about 12:30 p.m., CHP Fort Tejon units spotted the vehicle on the southbound 5 Freeway near Smokey Bear Road.
“CHP Newhall Area units began responding to the area in an attempt to get into position to initiate an enforcement stop,” the CHP added.
At 12:36 p.m., CHP Newhall units located the suspect vehicle and tried to conduct an enforcement stop, south of Smokey Bear Road. However, the suspect vehicle fled once again from law enforcement.
“Newhall units got into position for a spike strip, southbound I-5 at Lyons Avenue,” officials added.
After the CHP officers deployed the spike strip, the suspect tried to avoid the device.
He veered to the right and crashed with a Toyota Rav 4 driven by a 75-year-old woman before crashing into a pole.
After the crash, both vehicles stopped on the brush embankment west of lanes of traffic with the pole blocking the No. 1, 2, 3, and 4 lanes.
Then, the suspect and two passengers tried to escape on foot, but all were apprehended shortly after.
Moreover, the impact of the crash trapped the 75-year-old woman in her Toyota Rav 4.
“CHP officers at the scene extracted her from her burning vehicle before it was fully engulfed. She was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries,” the CHP said.
Then, authorities arrested 20-year-old Carreon from Baldwin Park for being in possession of a stolen vehicle, hit and run causing injuries, and evading, all felonies.
Due to the limited information available, the authorities continued to investigate the crash.
