SAN ANTONIO, TX (July 10, 2023) – Sunday morning, authorities arrested Angelica Avilez after a tragic high-speed chase on Enrique Barrera Highway and Callaghan Road.

The incident occurred at about 12:38 a.m. on Enrique Barrera Highway and Callaghan Road.

According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, a brief high-speed chase led to the death of a man wanted for fraud in Michigan.

Reports said that two deputies traveled near the 6400 block of Enrique Barrera Highway. Then, they noticed a gray F250 pickup truck heading in the opposite lanes of traffic without headlights on.

Officers said that the truck driver swerved back and forth between the correct and opposite traffic lanes.

Despite activating emergency lights to stop the pickup truck, the truck continued at a high speed and a pursuit started.

Eventually, a Camry at the intersection of Enrique Barrera Highway and Callaghan Road struck the pickup truck. Also, the impact led the truck to hit a utility pole and overturned.

Also, the driver and passenger in the Camry suffered serious injuries but were transported to the hospital for evaluation.

Furthermore, officers said that the pickup truck driver was staying in a nearby hotel off Enrique M Barrera Parkway. Also, the truck he rode was stolen.

BCSCO added that the driver also had “numerous items believed to be evidence of property crimes,” which include checks, copper items, etc.).

Then, the deputies secured a search warrant for the hotel room, and they talked with 25-year-old Angelica Avilez.

The authorities also discovered meth and other stolen items in the hotel room.

Eventually, authorities arrested Avilez at the Bexar County Jail for possession of a controlled substance of 4 grams – 200 grams.

Meanwhile, officers revealed that the driver killed in the crash was a 39-year-old man who had an active warrant in Michigan for fraud. His identity remained undisclosed due to pending family notification.

At this time, the circumstances that led to the crash remained unclear. Once additional details become available, the public will be notified.
