Hit-and-Run Driver Involved in Bicycle Collision near Linden Avenue
RIALTO, CA (September 28, 2018) – On Friday, a man was in coma after a bicycle crash on Bohnert Avenue. The victim was later identified as Andy Welch of Rialto.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision took place near Linden Avenue. Based on reports, Welch was riding his bike to Rosa’s Market to get something to eat when he was struck by an unknown vehicle. The driver of that vehicle fled the scene, leaving the injured bicyclist in the road.
Welch was severely injured but conscious, as other vehicles passed him by. After about half an hour, he was able to crawl to his cellphone and call for help. He was put in a medically induced coma at the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton following a surgery, to repair a rupture to his intestines. He has improved since then and he is now breathing on his own, although he remains on a ventilator.
The hit-and-run suspect remains at large at this time. No additional information has been released to the public, as the investigation continues.
When behind the wheel of a vehicle, always be on the lookout for other motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists on the road. By driving carefully and paying attention to your surroundings, dangerous accidents can be prevented.
