PETALUMA, CA (September 12, 2018) – A man lost his leg Wednesday afternoon after a motorcycle crash on eastbound Bodega Avenue. The victim was later identified as 31-year-old motorcyclist, Andrew Irby. His place of residence was not immediately disclosed.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision took place around 2:00 PM, just west of Thompson Lane.
Reports showed that Irby crossed two solid yellow lines in an attempt to pass two vehicles in front of him. His motorcycle then struck the left side of a 2013 Ford C-Max hybrid wagon that was making a left turn into a driveway. He suffered major injuries and was taken to the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. His right leg was amputated, and he is currently recovering.
The driver of the Ford was not injured, and there were no indications either driver was impaired. Based on witness statements, excessive speed is considered a factor in the crash. No further details have been released, as the incident is still under investigation by authorities.
When behind the wheel, it is important to drive carefully and within the designated speed limit. Pay attention to your surroundings for other vehicles, motorcyclists, and pedestrians, to prevent dangerous accidents on the road.
