Corning Crash on 5 Freeway Injures Andrare Bell and Ronald Pires Jr.
CORNING, CA (August 23, 2019) — Two drivers suffered injuries in a crash on the 5 Freeway near Gay Creek Bridge Wednesday morning.
The authorities said 22-year-old Andrare Bell of Orland was driving a 2007 Honda Accord southbound at around 3:15 a.m. The vehicle veered off the east side of the road and into the center divider. Bell overcorrected, causing the Honda to flip. The vehicle ended up blocking the southbound lanes.
Bell subsequently exited the Honda and was able to make it to the west shoulder of the freeway. However, 53-year-old Ronald Pires Jr. of Burney struck the Accord with his 2012 Honda Insight.
Bell suffered major injuries while Pires sustained minor injuries. An air ambulance transported Bell to Enloe Medical Center in Chico. On the other hand, a ground ambulance took Pires to the same hospital.
The officers arrested Bell on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The crash prompted the closure of southbound 5 Freeway for about 45 minutes. The crash is under investigation by the CHP Red Bluff Area office.
