1 Dead and Several Injured in Avondale Multi-Vehicle Accident
AVONDALE, AZ (October 25, 2019) – A person died while several others sustained injuries in a multi-vehicle accident on MC 85.
The incident occurred just east of the main entrance of the Sedona Peaks apartment complex in Avondale. 18-year-old Alika Lyau-Goowin died in the four-vehicle crash on Wednesday, October 23.
While two people attached tow straps underneath the damaged car, another vehicle struck the rear of the stopped vehicle.
23-year-old Marianna Villalobos Lopez and 18-year-old Josiah Gerona sustained multiple injuries as a result of the impact. Emergency responders later transported Lopez to Abrazo Hospital in stable condition. In addition, they took Gerona to the Abrazo hospital in critical condition. However, he is now listed in stable condition.
Alika Lyau-Goowin, Marianna Villalobos Lopez and Josiah Gerona are all students at Universal Technical Institute-Avondale.
“We are deeply saddened to learn several of our students were involved this week in an off-campus traffic accident in which one UTI student was killed and two others were injured, including one critically. On behalf of all of us at UTI, we send our sincerest condolences to the families and friends of the students involved,” said campus president of Universal Technical Institute-Avondale, Adrian Cordova.
Furthermore, four other people also suffered injuries in the crash but did not require hospitalization.
Authorities ruled out impairment and believe that speed may have played a role in the crash. However, the MCSO Vehicular Crimes Detectives currently investigates the collision.
