2 Killed and 5 Injured in Rollover Collision near Twisselman Road

KERN COUNTY, CA (May 27, 2018) – Two people were killed early Sunday evening and five others were injured after a rollover crash on Interstate 5. 58-year-old Alicia Ortiz and 64-year-old Ruben Cobian Fletes, both residents of Patterson, were later identified as the casualties in this incident.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 6:20 PM on the northbound Interstate 5, just south of Twisselman Road.

A 2002 Ford Explorer, driven by 29-year-old Lorena Fetes Ortiz, was heading north on the highway at approximately 70 miles per hour when the vehicle turned to the left and entered the center median area. In an attempt to return to the road, Ortiz steered the vehicle to the right but it overturned and landed on its left side.

Fletes and Ortiz, two passengers in the car, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and four other passengers, including three children, were transported to Kern Medical. 20-year-old Gloria Ortiz, a 10-year-old girl, and a 2-year-old boy sustained minor injuries while a 6-year-old boy sustained moderate injuries.

Investigators ruled out drugs and alcohol as contributing factors in the crash. No additional information is available at this time.

Wishing the family and friends of Alicia Ortiz and Ruben Cobian Fletes strength and comfort in this difficult time. May they rest in peace.
