Bryan Charette Arrested after Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash near Highway 101

SANTA BARBARA, CA (September 21, 2018) – A man was killed Friday evening following a suspected DUI crash near Highway 101. The victim was later identified as 73-year-old Alfredo Martinez, a resident of Oxnard.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident took place at about 7:25 PM. A northbound 2017 Honda Civic, driven by 35-year-old Bryan Charette of Lompoc, was seen speeding on Highway 1 when it crossed over the double yellow lines. The vehicle then collided head-on with a southbound 1997 Nissan pickup, driven by Martinez.

The pickup driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers. Meanwhile, Charette had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life, before he was airlifted to the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with major injuries. Updates on his current medical condition were not immediately available.

Charette was later arrested and will face felony DUI and manslaughter charges once he is released from the hospital. Additional information will be released following the conclusion of the investigation.
