44-Year-Old Man Killed in Street Sweeper Accident on 120th Avenue Northeast at Northeast 12th Street
BELLEVUE, WA (February 19, 2018) – On Monday morning around 11 AM, a man was struck and killed by a street sweeper in Bellevue’s Spring District on 120th Avenue Northeast at Northeast 12th Street.
The victim was identified on Tuesday by the King County Medical Examiner’s office as 44-year-old Alexandru Culai. According to camera footage of the scene of the accident, the man was kneeling down, possibly tying his shoe, when the street sweeper backed up over him.
Authorities say that Culai died from blunt-force injuries to the head and chest. Police spokesman, Seth Tyler, says that the death is being ruled as an accident, and that investigation will probably continue for months.
The accident took place in front of a construction site where an apartment building was being built on the 1300 block of NE 120th.
The sweeper was from Enviro Clean and did not seem to be impaired, according to officials. Police are unsure whether or not there was an audible backup alarm, or if the 67-year-old driver was using the back-up camera at the time of the crash.
A GoFundMe page was setup to help the family with funeral expenses.
Heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Alexandru Culai. He leaves behind his pregnant wife and two children, 8-year-old Daniel and 14-year-old Teodor. Culai was originally from Moldova and was a talented musician and music teacher.
