Off-Duty Firefighter Dies after Vehicle Overturns near Sheldon Road
ELK GROVE, CA (December 22, 2018) – An off-duty firefighter was killed Saturday afternoon following a solo-vehicle crash near Sheldon Road. The victim was later identified as 52-year-old Albaro Meraz, a firefighter from the Cosumnes Fire District.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened at about 1:45 PM. A 1971 Toyota was heading south on Highway 99 when it crashed into the median and rolled over.
Meraz, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. No other injuries were reported by the authorities.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the events that led to the fatal accident and to identify possible contributing factors. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call (916) 861-2300. Additional information will be released once it becomes available.
