17-Year-Old Girl from Rialto in Fatal Market Street Solo Car Crash
RIVERSIDE, CA (January 8, 2018) – Recent Arroyo Valley High School graduate, Aileen Canul, was sitting passenger in a 2000 Honda Civic driving south down Market Street between 2nd and 3rd Streets on Monday evening.
For unknown reasons, the driver lost control and veered off the road, hitting a tree. The California Highway Patrol reported the incident that took place in the residential area, around 4:50 PM.
According to the Riverside Fire Department Battalion Chief, Tony Perna, the car was so crumpled in the front, that the 17-year-old girl was trapped inside. Industrial saws were used to remove the young woman from the vehicle. Officials pronounced her dead at the scene.
The 18-year old Riverside male driver had minor injuries and was taken to the Riverside Community Hospital for medical treatment. His identity has not yet been released to the public.
Riverside Police Department’s Major Accident Team (M.A.I.T.) responded to the scene of the accident to investigate. Officers think that alcohol or drugs may have been involved in the crash.
A GoFundMe page was set up to help Canul’s family in this difficult time.
