One Dead in Ahwahnee Car Crash on Highway 49
AHWAHNEE, CA (February 18, 2019) – A woman was killed following a two-vehicle crash Monday morning around 9:43 a.m. on Highway 49.
According to an initial report, a black Chevrolet Silverado was heading southbound on Highway 49. While rounding a corner near Vista Del Rio Drive, it hit a patch of black ice on the road. The vehicle then slid sideways and traveled into the northbound lane.
Meanwhile, a mother and son on vacation from Lemoore were in a Dodge Ram pickup towing an empty flatbed trailer. The vehicle was traveling northbound at the same location at a speed around 50 to 55 mph.
The Silverado crossed into the northbound lane and the driver of the Dodge was unable to avoid the collision. The Dodge struck the Silverado on the passenger side, pushing it onto the eastbound shoulder of the road.
The impact caused the Dodge to overturn, partially blocking the northbound lane.
Madera County Fire, Sierra Ambulance, and other emergency personal responded to the scene. Caltrans conducted traffic control as the accident was investigated.
The driver of the Silverado, only described as an Ahwahnee woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. The occupants of the Dodge were unharmed.
Details regarding the identity of the deceased are not currently available. The incident remains under investigation.
