42-Year-Old Indian Man Fatally Injured in Three-Vehicle Collision near Airport Boulevard
SALINAS, CA (April 24, 2018) – A fatal three-vehicle crash on Highway 101 was caused by a driver looking for a pair of headphones, late Tuesday morning. The crash resulted in one fatality and two people sustaining major injuries.
According to the California Highway Patrol officers, the collision happened around 11 AM on Highway 101, near the Airport Boulevard Exit. A blue 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 38-year-old Catarino Quiroz Jr of King City, was traveling on the highway at high speeds. The traffic ahead began to slow down due to an ongoing construction, but Quiroz failed to stop in time.
The Silverado rear-ended a black 2017 Chevrolet Cruze, driven by 20-year-old Adersh Singh Landa of Anaheim. The impact slammed Quiroz’s pickup truck into a red Ford F-150, driven by 58-year-old Jose Luis Rabago of Nogales.
Landa and his passenger, 36-year-old Bhajan Singh Bhakar from India, suffered major injuries such as a broken pelvis and broken ribs, and were sent to the Natividad Medical Center. A third passenger, an unnamed 42-year-old man from India, was also rushed to the hospital where he died from blunt force trauma injuries. 36-year-old Nicole Quiroz, a passenger in the Silverado, suffered from pains, while Rabago and Quiroz were both reportedly unharmed from the collision.
Areas affected by the crash were shut down by the authorities for about an hour for the investigation. No one was arrested as the investigation still aims to shed some light on the situation. All blocked lanes were reopened at around 1 PM, except the lanes affected by the construction. The California Department of Transportation warns the motorists that they should watch out for signs about the Cal Trans road works and slow down when approaching the affected areas.
