Highway 1 Fiery DUI Crash Kills Adalberto “Beto” Mendez
Bloomfield, CA (April 17, 2021) – On April 10, Adalberto “Beto” Mendez died while his brother Raul Mendez was severely injured in a DUI crash on Highway 1.
The fatal crash took place at around 11:30 P.M.
The brothers were southbound on Highway 1, traveling home from work. Just then their Nissan Frontier crashed with a northbound Dodge truck driven by 47-year-old Joseph Mantua of Bodega Bay.
The two cars blocked the highway, north of Valley Ford Road after the accident.
Minutes later, a third driver came from the south in a Ford Ranger and failed to stop in time. 25-year-old Winter Nason of Santa Rosa struck the side of the Dodge before it rear-ended the Nissan.
Furthermore, the Nissan was consumed by flames. Beto Mendez, the Nissan driver, was unable to get out of the vehicle.
Raul Mendez was able to get out of the vehicle but was severely burned. His family said he went into surgery a day or so later.
Moreover, authorities are investigating whether the fire started after the first or second crash.
Officers arrested Mantua and Nason on suspicion of driving under the influence.
They took Mantua to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with major but non-fatal injuries.
