9-Year-Old Ilai Petersen Dead in Tragic Crash on Loop 101 [Chandler, AZ]

The Child’s Father Critical after Crash on Loop 101 and Ray Road in Chandler

Chandler, AZ (November 11, 2023) – Saturday morning, 9-year-old Ilai Petersen died, and his father sustained critical injuries in a crash on Loop 101 and Ray Road.

Chandler police responded to a call in the area of Loop 101 and Ray Road just after 10:30 a.m., reporting a serious accident.

Upon their arrival, officers discovered a two-car accident had occurred.

One of the vehicles involved had veered off the roadway, onto the sidewalk, where it collided with the man and the boy, who were waiting to cross the street. 

The boy succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The man, the child’s father was critically injured and was promptly transported to the hospital for medical attention.

The child was identified as Ilai Petersen.

Ilai’s father Aaron is out of the hospital and expected to be okay but still in shock.

It is not believed that impairment played a role in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
