Child Dies in Hit-and-Run Crash Involving DUI Driver at Marconi Avenue and Bell Street
ARDEN-ARCADE, CA (March 17, 2019) – A child was killed following a hit-and-run crash early Sunday morning in Arden-Arcade.
The fatal crash happened around 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of Marconi Avenue and Bell Street.
According to the CHP, a 9-year-old Eric Escobedo Jr., or “Junnie” and his mother were on their way home from a hospital when their car was hit by a suspected DUI driver, identified as a 27-year-old Rene Zaragoza Jr.
Zaragoza was reportedly running a red light before crashing into the family’s car. He then fled the scene without rendering aid.
A witness of the crash stopped and help the victims. The child was found trapped between the doors.
Both the mother and son were rushed to a hospital with serious injuries. Tragically, Junnie did not survive and was declared dead.
The child’s mother was recovering in the hospital Monday and is expected to survive.
Officers later tracked down Zaragoza to his home in Roseville and arrested him on suspicion of murder and felony DUI, among other charges.
According to the CHP North Sacramento, this was not his first DUI conviction. He was convicted of DUI in 2013. In 2014, he was caught driving on a suspended license and just last year pleaded no contest to evading a police officer.
Junnie would have turned 10 years old on April 4.
The family has set up a GoFundMe page and is asking for donations to help with funeral arrangements and medical expenses for the mother.
No words can mend the broken hearts and sorrow felt during this delicate moment. Our deepest condolences and sympathies are with the family and friends Eric “Junnie” Escobedo Jr.
