9-Year-Old Boy Killed in Tanker Truck Collision on State Route 118 [Moorpark, CA]

Boy Killed and 3 Injured in Two-Vehicle Crash near Balcom Canyon Road

 
MOORPARK, CA (August 10, 2018) – A boy was killed Friday morning and three others were hospitalized following a tanker truck collision on State Route 118.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened shortly before 8:00 AM, near Balcom Canyon Road. A tanker was heading westbound on the 118 when a 2014 Chevrolet Impala turned left onto the highway, directly in front of the truck.
 
After the tanker broadsided the car, both vehicles spun out of control and came to rest on the west side of the intersection.
 
The driver of the Chevrolet, a 45-year-old Somis woman, was rushed to the Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks. Her two children, a 9-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl, were sitting in the car at the time of the collision and were also taken to the same hospital. Unfortunately, the boy succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by the medical staff. His sister suffered trauma to the head and lower extremities, while their mother sustained trauma to her upper left torso.
 
The 65-year-old Los Angeles man driving the tanker was also hospitalized with moderate injuries. After the truck overturned, the driver suffered injuries to his upper torso and was transported to St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital in Camarillo.
 
About 1,000 to 1,200 gallons of gasoline spilled on the highway and reached nearby railroad tracks. Hazardous-materials crews from multiple fire agencies arrived at the scene to help remove the leaked gas and the disabled truck. Affected areas were reopened at around 11:20 PM.
 
An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fatal accident. It was also noted that the children were not secured in a seatbelt at the time of the crash. No additional details were provided to the public at this time.
