9 Hurt in Covington Car Accident
COVINGTON, WA (March 20, 2019) – Two people sustained critical injuries while seven students suffered minor injuries when a school bus was in an accident with an SUV.
At about 2:30 p.m. on March 18, deputies and medics were called to the scene of the accident near Covington Way SE and 165th Place SE. They were responding to reports of a school bus crash, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office.
Upon arrival, they saw evidence of a collision between an SUV and a Kent Lake High School bus. Over twenty students were on the bus at the time of the accident.
Surveillance footage revealed that the red SUV sped past a line of cars at a red light. The SUV then turned left in front of the school bus, the resulting impact caused the bus to lift and shudder.
Medical responders checked on the students; seven of whom suffered minor injuries.
Additionally, two of the occupants of the SUV sustained critical injuries. Paramedics transported them to Harborview Medical Center. Another three occupants from the SUV tried to escape on foot. However, authorities found and arrested them.
King County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Ryan Abbott said that one of the arrested, an 18-year-old male, had a handgun in his possession. “That person is a convicted felon and is not supposed to be in possession of a handgun. So they (were) transported to the King County Jail,” Abbott said.
The two other escapists complained of pain. Medical responders also transported them to a local hospital.
As of this time, detectives are uncertain of the SUV’s owner. They are still investigating all details surrounding the incident.
