9 Hurt in Los Angeles Crash on Sherman Way
LOS ANGELES, CA (October 22, 2019) – Nine people sustained injuries in a chain-reaction crash on Sherman Way on October 20.
The incident seriously hurt four people and sheared a fire hydrant. The incident also led to the roof collapse of a nearby shoe store. Meanwhile, authorities arrested one of the drivers on suspicion of drunken driving.
The incident between two vehicles happened shortly before 9:00 p.m. on Sherman Way and De Soto Avenue, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey revealed.
A Kia sheared off a fire hydrant and threw a geyser high into the air and a nearby Warehouse Shoe Sale store. Moreover, the pool of water on the roof caused it to collapse. Some high-voltage power lines also went down because of the incident.
“It was a lot of water. It was a pretty good geyser,” LAFD Battalion Chief Thomas Gikas stated.
“As a result of the water getting on top of the roof and the weight of the water, the roof collapsed inside the business,” Gikas added.
“All store employees are accounted for, and no other patients are believed to be outstanding,” Humphrey confirmed.
LAPD Sgt. Joe McGee revealed that a 10-year-old child inside the store sustained a broken leg following the roof collapse. McGee also said that a 2 1/2-year-old child also suffered injuries.
The sergeant revealed that a southbound car on De Soto Avenue crashed with the other westbound Car on Sherman Way. The two vehicles crashed in the intersection and sent the westbound car into a fire hydrant.
Authorities arrested the 29-year-old southbound driver, Ana Cabrera Noriega, on suspicion of DUI after officers noticed a “strong odor of alcohol” on her breath. In addition, the initial tests confirmed that she had twice the legal limit.
