SIMI VALLEY, CA (September 4, 2019) – Five people sustained injuries in a multi-vehicle crash near Madera Road on September 3.

Responders transported four people to a local hospital while the fifth one declined hospitalization.

The incident occurred after 9:00 a.m. near Madera Road on westbound 118 Freeway. The schoolchildren rode a charter bus to a field trip en route the nearby Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.

The incident involved three other vehicles aside from the bus. 43 people rode the four vehicles, including 33 minors and 7 adults on the bus. The 5th-grade students are students of Horizon Elementary School in Bakersfield.

As a result, the bus got jammed against the hillside, leaving no way for children to exit from the vehicle.

The Fire Department’s Urban Search and Rescue team utilized struts and wood cribbing blocks to steady up the moving bus. In addition, firefighters put a ladder against the side window to let the children and adults disembark.

The authorities are still investigating the pileup.

However, the westbound lanes of the 118 Freeway reopened.
