1 Driver Critical after Multi-Vehicle Crash on State Route 99 in San Joaquin County
San Joaquin County, CA (March 31, 2023) – Early Friday morning, four people died, and one driver sustained critical injuries in a multi-vehicle crash on State Route 99.
The fatal crash on State Route 99 in San Joaquin County happened around 12:25 a.m. on March 31.
CHP said a 32-year-old woman driving a black Honda Accord was heading northbound on SR-99 near French Camp Road when she collided with the rear of a U-Haul truck towing a flat bead trailer.
The U-driver Haul’s lost control of the truck and swerved into the trailer’s passenger side. This collision did not result in any injuries.
A black Subaru Impreza was struck head-on by the woman after she made a U-turn on the highway and started driving southbound on the northbound side of SR-99.
The Subaru’s driver was a 19-year-old Pasco, Washington, male, and one of the passengers was a 20-year-old Sacramento woman, according to CHP. A male passenger of unknown age and background is the second passenger.
The Honda’s lone female driver was declared deceased at the spot after coming to rest facing northbound in the center median. She may have been drinking when she was behind the wheel, according to law enforcement.
Following the head-on collision, the Subaru side-swiped a black GMC Denali pickup, driven by Peter Laidlaw, 40, of Grass Valley, that was towing a white utility trailer.
The driver of the GMC was able to pull onto the shoulder against the sound wall and sustained no injuries
The Subaru then stopped in a northbound lane facing southbound where it was in another head-on collision with a Chevrolet Suburban, driven by Nicholas Craggs, 40, of Stockton.
Both of the vehicles were found in the center median with the vehicles still face to face.
CHP arrested Craggs for driving under the influence of alcohol.
All three occupants of the Subaru were pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the Chevrolet was found to have major injuries.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased victims. May the bereaved find solace in this extremely difficult time.
