2 People Arrested After Crash on State Route 163 in Kearny Mesa

Kearny Mesa, CA (July 19, 2024) – The California Highway Patrol reported that a multi-vehicle crash on state Route 163 in the Kearny Mesa area early Friday morning resulted in four fatalities and led to the arrest of two drivers. 

CHP officials stated the crash, involving three vehicles, occurred just before 1:30 a.m. on southbound SR-163 after the transition from southbound Interstate 805.

While the exact circumstances leading to the incident remain unclear, CHP confirmed that four people lost their lives. 

Emergency crews found all four victims, who had been ejected from their vehicles, on the roadway. Three of the victims were identified as males aged 24, 26, and 27, while the fourth victim has not yet been identified. 

Officials informed ABC 10News that a 32-year-old man and a 25-year-old man were taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The CHP is investigating the events leading up to the crash, including whether the two men suspected of DUI knew each other. 

Images of the scene profoundly affected Bruce Mezan, who said, “It’s just deep, deep sadness because it resonates with me.” 

In February 2020, Mezan was on his way to teach a motorcycle safety class when a drunk driver hit him at a Rancho Santa Fe intersection, leading to a two-month hospitalization and the amputation of his right leg below the knee. “I feel so heartbroken because of the devastation. I’m very aware of the depth of the pain that’s felt for so many people for so long,” Mezan expressed.

Due to the emergency response and investigation, southbound SR-163 between Genesee Avenue and the transition to I-805 was closed for several hours, with traffic diverted onto I-805.
