Hemet Man Killed in Pedestrian Accident on Highway 74
Homeland, CA (October 16, 2020) – On Friday, a 35-year-old man from Hemet, died in a pedestrian accident on Highway 74.
The fatal accident took place after midnight on the four-lane corridor, east of Sultanas Road.
Officer Mike Lassig said the victim was nowhere near a marked crosswalk when he started to cross the highway.
A 2014 Chevrolet Cruze driven by a 19-year-old Hemet woman approached the area at an unknown speed at the same time that the victim stepped into the southbound lanes. As a result, the vehicle accidentally struck the pedestrian.
“This … occurred during the hours of darkness, and there are no street lights in the immediate area,” Lassig said. “The driver did not see the pedestrian crossing in front of her vehicle and struck him.”
The Chevrolet driver did not sustain injuries from the crash. She stopped and called 911.
Meanwhile, Riverside County Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene.
The authorities screened the woman for possible impairment. They confirmed she was not under the influence. Police did not issue the woman any citations.
Police continue to investigate the incident.
