32-Year-Old Richard Vela Dies in Highway 349 Collision [Midland, TX]

Midland, TX (April 9, 2024) – 32-year-old Richard Vela and 39-year-old Felipe Avila of Odessa were killed in a Highway 349 collision Monday afternoon.

It was about 4:15 p.m. when the fatal crash happened at the intersection with Tom Craddick Highway.

Officers said a dump truck failed to yield the right of way to a southbound Ford F-350 on Highway 349.

Vela and Avila, who were riding the Ford F-350, were declared dead at the scene.

Another person in the Ford was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital.

The authorities released the dump truck driver at the scene because the driver was not injured.

Troopers closed the eastbound portion of Craddick Highway from Holiday Hill to State Highway 349 while they investigated.
