Tragic 3-Vehicle Crash on US 287 Killed 1 Person and Injured 1 [Clay County, TX]

 16-Year-Old Dead After Crash on US 287 in Clay County

Clay County, TX (May 31, 2024) – On Friday, a 16-year-old driver died, and another driver sustained injuries in a 3-vehicle crash on US 287.

The Texas Department of Public Safety investigated a three-vehicle wreck about a quarter mile south of Bellevue on Friday. 

Sgt. Juan Gutierrez with Texas DPS confirmed that the major wreck, which occurred around 12 p.m. on May 31, resulted in the death of a 16-year-old driver and the injury of a 47-year-old driver.

The 47-year-old had parked his Volvo, which was towing a semi-trailer, on the right-hand shoulder of US 287. 

While he was parked, a southbound Chevrolet Malibu failed to stay within its lane and struck the back of the parked vehicle. 

The Malibu then spun clockwise and hit the trailer of a third vehicle, a Freightliner also towing a semi-trailer. The Malibu came to rest across both southbound lanes.

The 16-year-old passenger in the Malibu was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash. 

The driver of the Malibu was transported to Texas Health Harris Methodist Fort Worth with incapacitating injuries. 

Texas DPS reported that neither occupant of the Malibu was wearing a seatbelt during the incident. 

As the deceased individual is a minor, Texas DPS will not release her name.
