IRVINE, CA (November 22, 2019) – Three young men died and another was critically injured following a fiery crash early Friday morning in Irvine.
The crash happened around 1:45 a.m. on Harvard Avenue near University Drive.
CHP officials said a red Mercedes-Benz struck a tree and caught fire. As a result, three of the four people inside the car died at the scene. A fourth patient was rushed to a hospital, where the individual was listed in critical condition.
The coroner’s office did not release the identities of the victims pending notification of next of kin.
Investigators are looking at speed as a possible factor in the crash. A university representative said it was not yet clear if the victims were students.
All northbound and southbound lanes on Harvard Avenue between Michelson and University drives were closed, but reopened just after 1:00 p.m., the Police Department said.
