LAKE COUNTY, CA (May 20, 2018) – Three occupants of a single vehicle were injured after a DUI accident on Highway 20, late Sunday afternoon.
Driver Aquilino Vazquez-Garcia, 31, of Los Angeles, was driving a 1998 Honda Accord westbound on rural Highway 20, just east of Clearlake Oaks.
The accident occurred around 4 PM, as the vehicle was traveling at unsafe speeds with three others passengers inside. Vazquez-Garcia entered a left curve in the roadway and lost control of the car. The Honda slid across the eastbound traffic lanes and off the south shoulder.
As a result, the vehicle collided with a tree, leaving passenger Christian Vazquez trapped in the car. He remained in Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital in critical condition Tuesday, and his age and town of residence were not immediately disclosed.
Sitting in the right back seat, 31-year-old Sabino Rios-Garcia suffered a laceration to his chin and was arrested at the scene for public intoxication. He was transported to the Adventist Health Clear Lake Hospital for treatment and later released to CHP officers. Another passenger, 23-year-old Cristian Figueroa-Roque of Escalon, was uninjured.
Vasquez-Garcia sustained major injuries and was transported to the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital by a medical helicopter, before being detained on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was then booked into the Lake County Jail on several charges including driving without a license. His bail is set at $100,000.
The California Highway Patrol said that it appeared all occupants were not wearing seat belts at the time of the collision. No additional information has been released at this time.
