Christopher Anaya Arrested on Penngrove Car Crash
Penngrove, CA (September 15, 2020) – On Saturday, three people were injured, while police arrested 19-year-old Christopher Anaya in a car crash on Old Redwood Road.
California Highway Patrol officers tried to pull over the Infiniti sedan Anaya was driving after clocking it at 90 mph heading north on Highway 101 near the Petaluma Boulevard exit. Instead, he fled from the officers and exited the freeway at West Sierra Avenue in Cotati.
Officers canceled the chase for safety reasons as the car sped southbound on Old Redwood Highway.
Shortly after 3 a.m., firefighters responded to a crash at Ely Road and Old Redwood Highway crash. They found the same Infiniti sedan plowed into the Palace of Fruit in Penngrove.
The force from the impact made the fuel tank to rupture. It started a fire causing the building to ignite.
Furthermore, the incident was upgraded to a structure fire. Six engines and around 20 firefighters from various local fire departments, including the Rancho Adobe and Petaluma departments, responded to the scene.
Police said it took about an hour to put out the blaze.
“(The fruit stand) is pretty close to a total loss,” Rancho Adobe Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Weihman said.
Officers pulled all four occupants trapped in the vehicle out through the back window.
CHP Officer David deRutte said two female passengers, one with minor injuries and one with more serious injuries. Rescuers transported them to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
Meanwhile, Anaya did not get injured. Authorities arrested and booked him into the Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of felony evading law enforcement and reckless driving.
A GoFundMe campaign was set up to help the Palace of Fruit rebuild.
Practice safe driving habits on the road at all times… even when it is empty, even when there is no police officer around to make sure you make a full and complete stop.
