Injuries Reported in Montecito Accident on Highway 101
MONTECITO, CA (October 11, 2021) – Sunday morning, three people suffered injuries in a 6-car pileup crash on Highway 101.
The first incident occurred at 7:20 a.m. on southbound Highway 101, south of Sheffield Drive in a construction zone.
According to reports, a gray Honda Pilot drove in the #1 lane at an unknown speed. Then, it slowed suddenly. Meanwhile, a gray Honda Accent traveled behind the Honda Pilot at 65 miles per hour. The Honda Accent failed to stop in time and rear-ended the Pilot.
Afterward, a second similar incident happened in the same area involving four vehicles.
At this time, the second crash remains under investigation. However, the drivers in both crashes said that the low, glaring sun played a role in the crash.
The crashes shut down both lanes of Highway 101. By 8:10 a.m., they reopened the #2 lane.
However, by 9:20 a.m., as crews waited for tow trucks to clear the six vehicles, they found a man driving in the #2 lane. They said that the driver was looking down at his phone instead of the road.
The CHP stopped the man and found out that he showed symptoms of being impaired. Authorities arrested the 32-year-old man from Nicaragua at the scene for driving under the influence.
By 10:00 a.m., both lanes of the freeway were fully operational.
