3 People Hospitalized After Crash on State Route 20 in Winthrop

Winthrop, WA (September 25, 2024) – On Tuesday, three people sustained injuries in a two-vehicle crash on State Route 20.

The crash happened on September 24, at approximately 3:49 p.m., a personal injury collision took place on State Route 20 (SR20) at milepost 158. 

The crash, triggered by a failure to yield, injured three people and blocked the eastbound lane of the highway.

According to the Washington State Patrol, both vehicles involved were traveling westbound on SR20. Emily K. Griebenow, 33, from Tacoma, WA, was driving a silver 2008 Subaru Impreza and pulled onto the shoulder to make a left turn but did not yield to a black 2021 Toyota Sienna driven by Xianggan Kuang, 60, of Kenmore, WA.

The two vehicles collided, coming to rest in the eastbound lane, obstructing traffic. The impact resulted in injuries to Griebenow, Kuang, and a passenger from the Sienna, Ming Zhang, 55, from Shanghai, China. All three were transported to Three Rivers Hospital for treatment. 

Two other passengers, Runtao Li, 61, of Shanghai, and Nong Zhang, 55, from Kenmore, were evaluated at the scene by medical personnel.

Everyone involved was reportedly wearing seatbelts, although there remains some uncertainty regarding the seatbelt use of a few passengers. 

Authorities do not suspect drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene. The Subaru was confirmed to be involved in the crash, while the Toyota Sienna sustained severe damage and was declared totaled.

The authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.
