3 People Hospitalized after 2-Vehicle Crash on Highway 89 near Calpine
Calpine, CA (July 28, 2023) – Friday afternoon, three people were hospitalized after a 2-vehicle crash on Highway 89.
According to the CHP, James Sweeney, 80, of Los Gatos was driving a Toyota 4-Runner northbound, but for an unknown reason crossed completely into the southbound lane.
He collided head-on with a Ford F-350 occupied by Ian Baxter, 55, and Mark O’Camb, 51, of Sacramento.
Officers at the scene said it did not appear that Sweeney fell asleep, nor did drugs or alcohol play a role. The officer said as Sweeney went around the curve, he saw the grille of a vehicle and then the collision occurred. Because of his age, his driver’s license will be reviewed by DMV.
All three were transported to Renown Medical Center in Reno.
The three individuals didn’t display signs of significant injuries, the officer said, but they were sent to Renown due to the massive nature of the impact.
Further investigation into this crash is ongoing.
