17-Year-Old Driver Arrested in Deadly DUI Crash on Highway 163 in Mission Valley
MISSON VALLEY, CA (January 18, 2020) – Two teenage boys were killed following a DUI crash early Saturday morning in Mission Valley.
The crash happened around 3:15 a.m., on the off-ramp from southbound Highway 163 to westbound 8 Freeway.
CHP officials said a 2008 BMW carrying five teenage boys was speeding on the freeway. It then flew off the ramp and landed about 100 feet down an embankment. There, it caught fire and ignited a nearby brush.
Two of the passengers were trapped in the back seat and killed. Their bodies were later found after firefighters put out the flames. Authorities only described them 15-year-old boys.
Furthermore, the driver and two other teens were able to escape from the burning vehicle. Paramedics later took them to a nearby hospital with major injuries. However, there has been no update on their current condition.
The 17-year-old driver of the BMW was later arrested at the hospital on suspicion of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
All five boys were friends, officials said.
The southbound lanes of Highway 163 from Friars Road were temporarily closed during the investigation. However, the roadway has since reopened.
