2 Officers Hurt in Moxee Car Accident
MOXEE, WA (December 20, 2018) – Two Yakima County sheriff’s deputies sustained injuries on December 18 after a chase which led to a head-on crash in Moxee.
The chase started around 11:00 a.m. when a deputy saw a stolen vehicle stuck in the mud on West Birchfield Road. The 19-year-old Yakima male driver fled when the deputy turned the emergency lights on. The pursuit began south on Birchfield Road and went through several country roads and a hop field. According to reports, the vehicle traveled at a speed of around 100 miles per hour on Highway 24 and twice prevented driving over spikes deployed by officials to stop it.
The suspect vehicle hit a fence and multiple guide wires in a hop field, crashed with a deputy’s vehicle head-on while trying to escape in the area. According to officials, a deputy utilized evasive movements to prevent from being hit by the vehicle.
The pursuit ended at an apartment complex on Beauchene Road.
The crash left the deputies with injuries, and their patrol vehicle requires repair to be driveable.
Meanwhile, the suspect was detained and booked into the Yakima County jail on suspicion of eluding, hit and run, resisting arrest, first-degree assault, attempted first-degree assault, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, violation of a no-contact order, first-degree malicious mischief and driving on a suspended license.
Moxee police and the Washington State Patrol were the units who assisted in the incident.
