Two Girls Hit in Crosswalk after Chain-Reaction Crash at 48th Street and Southern Avenue
TEMPE, AZ (September 5, 2019) – Two young pedestrians suffered injuries after a chain-reaction crash on 48th Street, Thursday evening.
According to the Tempe Police Department, the incident happened at about 6:30 PM. Due to unknown reasons, a vehicle slammed into the rear of a stopped vehicle near the Southern Avenue traffic light.
The impact of the crash pushed the stopped vehicle to a marked crosswalk. There, it hit an 11-year-old girl and a 3-year-old girl crossing the street with their mother.
Emergency responders transported the girls to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, the mother of the children did not sustain injuries.
Both drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Authorities ruled out impairment as the cause of the collision. Investigators will release additional information once it becomes available.
