2 Dead in Tempe Multi-Vehicle Accident on Loop 202 Red Mountain near Scottsdale Road

TEMPE, AZ (August 22, 2024) – Monday night, 2 people died in a 3-vehicle crash on Loop 202 Red Mountain near Scottsdale Road.

The incident happened at about 8:00 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of Loop 202 near Scottsdale Road.

According to the DPS, a red passenger car collided with the rear of an SUV, which was subsequently struck by a pickup truck, forcing the SUV into the median barrier. 

Tempe fire officials reported that two individuals in the red car were pronounced dead at the scene, while the pickup truck’s driver was hospitalized for treatment. The SUV’s driver was uninjured. 

Meanwhile, the cause of the accident remains under investigation, and no criminal charges are currently anticipated. The freeway was closed for several hours overnight but has since reopened early Tuesday morning.
