Young Boy Dead After School Bus Crash on 2751 West SH 21 Caldwell Road in Bastrop
Bastrop, TX (March 22, 2024) – On Friday, two people died including a young boy, and injured 51 others when a school bus crashed on 2751 West SH 21 Caldwell Road.
A cement truck collided with a school bus carrying over 40 pre-K students returning from a field trip to a Texas zoo on Friday. The collision resulted in the deaths of a boy on the bus and a man in another vehicle, as reported by authorities.
The crash caused the bus to roll over on the highway on the rural outskirts of Austin, leading to a heavy emergency vehicle presence and a shutdown of traffic for hours.
The collision left the bus’s roof crumpled and another nearby vehicle almost destroyed, with personal items scattered across the road.
Kevin Parker, the division chief of Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services, reported that four critically injured individuals were airlifted from the crash site, while six others with potentially serious injuries were taken by ambulance.
An ambulance bus also transported about 10 other patients with minor injuries to a children’s hospital.
The bus was carrying 44 students and 11 adults from the Hays Consolidated Independent School District at the time of the accident.
Eric Wright, the school district superintendent, mourned the loss of a “precious young boy,” a pre-K student at Tom Green Elementary School in Buda, and noted that 51 others were injured, including the bus driver, marking a “horrible and tragic day for our school district.”
The collision occurred around 2 p.m. when the concrete truck, heading in the opposite direction, veered into the bus’s lane and struck it head-on, causing the bus to roll over, according to Sgt. Deon Cockrell of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The other fatality occurred in a vehicle that was either behind the bus or part of the collision with the concrete truck. Cockrell confirmed that the truck driver was cooperating with the investigation, and by evening, all the children had been reunited with their families, as stated by Wright.
