2 Dead and 1 Hurt in Oceanside Car Accident on 5 Freeway
OCEANSIDE, CA (January 15, 2020) – Two people died while another sustained injuries in a car accident on 5 Freeway on January 14.
According to reports, a wrong-way pickup truck on 5 Freeway collided head-on into a sedan after brief police pursuit in Oceanside.
Oceanside police spokesman Tom Bussey revealed that the police stopped the truck due to a minor traffic violation on Carmelo Drive and Monterey Drive at 12:12 a.m. However, as the officers went out of their vehicle, the driver fled and drove to the southbound 5 Freeway. The pursuit went on for several minutes. However, they stopped the chase when the driver began driving the wrong way on northbound 5 Freeway.
The collision then occurred after 12:20 a.m. when the Ford F-150 crashed into a 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix sedan just south of Las Flores Drive, CHP Officer Mark Latulippe said.
The 42-year-old driver of the truck and the 19-year-old Pontiac driver both died at the scene. Their identity remains unreleased as of this time. However, the investigators said that the Pontiac driver was a military service member.
Meanwhile, a 35-year-old passenger in the pickup required hospitalization after suffering from multiple broken bones and chest and neck pain.
The crash led to the closure of all northbound lanes of 5 Freeway near Las Flores Drive. By 5:45 a.m., the lanes reopened.
