Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Loop 202 in Mesa

Mesa, AZ (October 23, 2024) – On Wednesday, two kids died and one other sustained injuries in a crash on Loop 202.

According to the Department of Public Safety (DPS), a pickup truck collided at high speed with the back of a tow truck parked along the side of the 202. 

The crash killed both children, a 9-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl, at the scene, while a third child was hospitalized with minor injuries.

DPS reports that the children’s mother, who was driving the pickup, may have been distracted at the time of the accident. 

She was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. 

Jesse Torrez, Director of the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, explained, “If your peripheral vision shifts to the right, you tend to drift in that direction. Unfortunately, this woman drifted right. Had she done so two seconds later, she likely would have missed the tow truck.”

The identities of the children remain private. Emily Schenck, a longtime family friend, shared that the children who died leave behind two siblings. “We lost two children with their whole lives ahead of them and two siblings who will forever miss them,” Schenck said. “I can’t imagine how their parents will cope with this loss.”

It remains uncertain whether the mother will face charges in the incident.
