2 Hospitalized in Semi-Truck Crash on Highway 101 [Willits, TX]

Willits, TX (December 15, 2023) – Two people sustained injuries following a semi-truck crash on Highway 101 Thursday morning.

It was about 3:51 a.m. when a semi truck and a Suzuki SUV collided at mile marker 53.4.

Investigators said a Suzuki driver was southbound when he experienced a mechanical malfunction of his vehicle. The driver said the vehicle would not drive forward and only in reverse. 

Due to the lack of a shoulder to pull off on, the driver drove in reverse. The vehicle was in northbound lane and the driver was attempting to find a place to get the vehicle off the roadway.

At the same time, northbound big rig driver saw the lights pointed toward the south. The big rig driver thought the headlights were from a southbound vehicle. 

It was too late to avoid a collision when the big rig driver noticed that the Suzuki was in his northbound lane.

The Suzuki SUV went off the road about 20 feet and the big rig went off the road about 15 feet though big rig’s trailer is still on the road.

Two injured people were transported to Howard Hospital with one of the seriously injured.

Officers are still investigating.
