2 Hurt in Renton Car Accident
RENTON, WA (September 6, 2019) – Two people, including a police officer, suffered injuries following a police chase on Main Avenue on Thursday.
The incident began around 7:25 a.m., when officers responded to a 911 call about a red pickup that partially blocked the road in the 3400 block of Main Avenue South. According to the caller, the pickup was there since 1:00 a.m.
Upon officers’ arrival, three suspects were located in the pickup sleeping. Officers also spotted possible narcotics inside the vehicle and detained the driver without incident.
However, the front passenger then took the driver’s seat while officers tried to detain him. He then fled at a high rate of speed with one officer still inside the vehicle.
The suspect eventually lost control of the pickup before striking a parked car. There, the vehicle jumped a nearby curb and crashed into Eric Choi’s garage door.
“I didn’t know what it was,” Eric Choi revealed. He was at home with his sister at the time. “I was sleeping and I thought it was an explosion.”
“I heard that the wheels spinning. Boom! Then I heard that from the house,” a man from the neighborhood added. “When he smashed the car in the house, there was a lot of noise.”
Choi’s sister witnessed and heard the commotion. “She said there was a car that was weaving with a policeman hanging on it,” Choi stated.
Authorities arrested the second driver for investigation of assault on an officer. They issued several warrants and began a DUI investigation.
Meanwhile, responders transported the third occupant of the pickup to a nearby hospital for further treatment. She sat at the back seat at the time of the crash.
Moreover, the officer suffered injuries and went to Valley Medical Center for further evaluation. However, there has been no update on his current condition at this time.
The house sustained cosmetic damage as a result of the impact.
Authorities are urging anyone with information or surveillance footage in the area to call Detective Renggli at [email protected] or 425-430-7525, and refer to Case No. 19-10088.
