Fatal Two-Vehicle Collision near Peck Road
SOUTH EL MONTE, CA (September 2, 2018) – Two people were killed early Sunday morning following a fiery crash on 60 Freeway. The identities of the victims were not immediately released, pending notification of family members.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a semi-truck slammed into the rear of a BMW at about 4:30 AM near Peck Road. It was unclear whether the BMW had slowed in a traffic lane or was completely stopped.
The semi-truck lost control and rolled over before the vehicles burst into flames. Both drivers sustained fatal injuries, and they were pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. The victims were confirmed to be the sole occupants of their vehicles.
A SigAlert was issued due to the severity of the damage caused by the crash. The No. 5 lane on the eastbound side of the freeway and the Peck Road on-ramp remained closed for several hours. One lane was later reopened on the 60, but traffic remained backed up as far as Rosemead Boulevard.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the collision and to identify possible contributing factors. Authorities did not disclose additional information to the public.
