1 Dead in Mount Vernon Train Accident
MOUNT VERNON, WA (January 15, 2019) — A 19-year-old man died after being struck by a train on January 14 in Mount Vernon.
Mount Vernon Lt. Greg Booth revealed that the police came to the area before 2:00 a.m. He added that the man was said to be strolling north on the tracks when a northbound freight train came around the curve under 5 Freeway.
Booth also stated that the train operator tried to alert the man by sounding the horn and trying to use emergency brakes. But to no avail, the man didn’t move away and the train was not able to avoid the crash.
As a result, tracks were unavailable for multiple hours.
According to investigators, they are trying to identify why the man was on the tracks and why he stayed despite the oncoming train.
