Ruth Shopp Hurt after Sonora Accident
SONORA, CA (November 19, 2018) – A 14-year-old jogger was struck by a vehicle that left her injured on Tuesday, November 13.
The victim, Ruth Shopp of Sonora, was moving eastbound facing traffic on Campo Seco Road east of Crooked Lane and heading toward Lime Kiln Road when she was hit by a vehicle at about 6:15 p.m.
According to CHP spokesperson Faustino Pulido, it was dark outside and instead of stopping to help the victim, the westbound driver fled leaving Shopp suffering from major injuries and hidden in tall grass on the side of the road.
Pulido stated that while lying injured on the shoulder, Shopp was able to extend one arm toward the westbound traffic lane. A passing westbound motorist noticed her and stopped to render her aid.
Debris from the suspect vehicles’ front lighting components and/or side mirror were found on the westbound traffic lane at the scene and were collected by the Highway Patrol as evidence.
Shopp was transported via helicopter to Valley Children’s Hospital for treatment. While Pulido said that her injuries are not critical, he indicates that the accident could have turned tragic if she was not found and left overnight in the cold.
Any person who may have information about the vehicle or the driver is urged to contact the investigating officer T. Gowin at (209) 984-3944.
If you ever get involved in a traffic accident, do not attempt to flee the scene. Face the consequences of your actions and wait for the arrival of the police. By following driving laws and being careful when behind the wheel, you can keep yourself and others around you safe.
