1 Hospitalized after Sonoma Bicycle Collision on River Road
SONOMA, CA (September 26, 2019) – An 11-year-old boy suffered injuries after car and bicycle collision on River Road on September 23.
Officers believe that the boy faced traffic as he traveled west around 6:00 p.m. over an overpass.
The boy got struck when 30-year-old Brandon Bonner in a Toyota Camry turned right onto an on-ramp for Highway 101 south, CHP spokesman David deRutte revealed.
Brandon Bonner from Cotati stopped after the car and bicycle collision.
deRutte added that the bicyclist didn’t wear a helmet at the time of the crash. It’s also cleared that there’s no crossing at the on-ramp where the boy got hit.
“It looks like (the boy) rode out into traffic,” deRutte stated. “(The driver) wasn’t going at an excessive speed but fast enough to get on the highway.”
An ambulance transported the bicyclist to the Sonoma County Airport. The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office helicopter, Henry 1 eventually airlifted him to the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland.
Officers also clarified that Bonner didn’t suffer from drug or alcohol intoxication during the incident.
It is vital to never drive when drunk and to always be alert for pedestrians and bicyclists. In addition, follow all traffic laws to avoid causing or being involved in an accident.
